Divinity balanced its delicate piano plinks with squiggly 8-bit squoinks here and there Hear the Bells was a swaying chorus of Passion Pit-like falsettos, all building to a thuddingly grand chorus.Īt times Robinson seemed to be experimenting with Worlds before the crowd's eyes and ears, slowing and twisting his songs into a spectrum of almost ambient tones. Musically, Robinson gave most of Worlds a creative workout through a series of creative extended mixes. It's all a tad achingly sincere, but unlike most DJs, at least Robinson has something heartfelt to say. On the operatic farewell Goodbye To a World: Though it's the end of the world, don't blame yourself now / And if it's true, I will surround you and give life to a world / That's our own. On the swelling, string-synth-laden Fellow Feeling: I cried, for I didn't think it could be true / That you and I might have always known one another.
Throughout the night, those lyrics, and others, filled the screen behind Robinson's rig. On Sea of Voices, Robinson hunched over his synthesizers, twinkling out atmospheric tones as a disembodied whisper echoed through the club: We'll see creation come undone. Worlds is a stunning career reinvention for the EDM wunderkind, a teenage brostep banger and onetime Skrillex protege who now seems happy chasing indie-pop rabbits like Passion Pit, MGMT, Washed Out and Robyn. Robinson played songs - honest-to-goodness songs, with breaks between each one - that swelled and pulsed like orchestral suites, ripe with symphonic grandeur. Unlike the Megatron-like booths favored by many a dubstepper, the North Carolina-born DJ stood behind a plexiglass podium of concentric half-moons - clean, airy, Deco-minimalist - adorned with a microphone, laptop, synthesizers and a small synth drum kit, which he'd wallop with fury every now and then.Īnd while Robinson's early-career EDM anthems (the darkly chirpy Unison, his and Mat Zo's heart-racing, retro-soulful Easy) got their due, this was no commercial-free megamix.
